This project involved energy modelling and compliance verification for a new vehicle wash bay with an attached office and mechanical area in northern Alberta’s cold climate zone. Using the NECB 2020 Performance Path, Acacia Engineering developed a comprehensive energy model in HAP 6.2 to optimize the building envelope and mechanical design for energy efficiency and code compliance.

The analysis incorporated advanced envelope assemblies, including insulated concrete form (ICF) walls, R50 roof insulation, and under-slab XPS insulation, alongside high-performance triple-glazed windows and efficient gas-fired systems. Despite the limited availability of mechanical drawings, the Acacia team successfully modelled and verified performance through close client coordination.

The proposed design achieved a 3.7% overall improvement in total annual energy performance and a 2.1% reduction in GHG emissions compared to the NECB 2020 reference model. Key contributors included optimized ventilation systems, improved service water heating efficiency, and a high-efficiency building envelope.
